Job Description: Director of Music & Worship Ministries

Position Type: Salaried, exempt
Hours: up to 30 hours/week on avg over 52 weeks in a year; including Sundays worked and evening

Purpose: The Director of Music & Worship Ministries leads the musical life and ministry of the church, fostering spiritual growth through worship, vocal and instrumental leadership, and congregational singing. Managed by the Senior Pastor, this role blends biblical theology, creativity, discernment, collaboration, and ministry sensitivity to support the church’s mission.

Essential Responsibilities
Music & Worship Leadership

  • Plan and lead music (hymns, songs, and other service music) for the annual calendar of regular and special worship services, collaborating with the pastor for alignment with service flow, biblical theology, philosophy of worship, sermons, and the life of the church

  • Personally lead music for at least two regular worship services per month (with the exceptions of time off), one or more Advent services, Christmas Eve service(s), and Holy Week services

  • Develop volunteer music leaders as available and cultivate musical leadership opportunities for these volunteers

  • In collaboration with the pastor and volunteer song leaders, thoughtfully introduce new songs to the congregation throughout the year for congregational and home worship

  • Coordinate and lead accompanist(s) for regular and special worship services

  • Instrumentally accompany services if needed (not to replace paid accompanist)

    Instrumental and Vocal Ensemble Leadership

  • Recruit, train, and nurture volunteer musicians, singing leaders, and ensemble members and leaders

  • Arrange, compose, and/or coordinate special music for holidays and events

  • Develop and lead musical ensembles across age ranges, including children’s vocal ensembles,

    and direct volunteer ensemble leaders

    Administrative Duties

  • Coordinate and plan worship service and music schedule, including rehearsals, slide decks, sound checks, volunteer musicians, and other volunteer scheduling

  • Coordinate with volunteer audio/visual team leader(s) for service a/v needs and sound checks

  • Coordinate with the music committee and volunteer team leaders to maintain music library,

    audio equipment, and instruments

  • Regularly communicate with church staff, congregation, and music committee about

    programming

  • Serve as staff liaison to and permanent member of the music committee

  • Prepare and administer the annual music budget, in collaboration with music committee

Congregational and Community Engagement

  • Encourage singing, worship without distraction, and musical participation across ages and abilities

  • Collaborate with local musicians and community groups when appropriate

  • Other duties within the church as may be assigned

    Required Qualifications

  • Several years of personal, publicly-professed Christian faith, trusting in Jesus Christ alone for salvation, and having undergone personal baptism by immersion (or undergoing within three months of hire)

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in music, or equivalent experience; degree from a Baptist institution with church music studies strongly preferred

  • Proficiency in and strong knowledge of Christian sacred music repertoire, including traditional hymns, modern hymns, and contemporary songs

  • Strong experience in congregational singing accompanied by acoustic instruments

  • Experience leading vocal and instrumental ensembles of varying age ranges and styles,

    including children

  • Comfort with leading traditional, folk, and contemporary worship music styles

  • Proficiency in instrumental accompaniment, especially for leading congregational singing;

    piano or keyboard proficiency strongly preferred

  • Familiarity with Baptist worship traditions

  • Spiritual, emotional, and personal maturity evidenced in character and behavior, fulfilling the

    requirements for deacons in I Timothy 3

  • Ascribe to and live by the church’s statement of faith, church covenant, and philosophy of

    worship

  • Become a covenant member of Penney Memorial United Baptist Church within three months

    of hire, and maintain membership in good standing for duration of employment

  • A strong biblical theology and personal philosophy of music and Christian worship

  • A heart to worship God in spirit and in truth and to use music in service of that worship

  • Ability to work collaboratively with pastoral and other staff, paid accompanists, and volunteers

    Evaluation: The Director of Music & Worship Ministries will receive a 90-day review and an annual review of job performance, to include review from one volunteer from music ministries, one member of the music committee, and the Senior Pastor or a person appointed by him. This review will be coordinated by the Employee Relations Team and will include a self-assessment by and feedback from the Director of Music and Worship Ministries. If there is no Employee Relations Team at the time of the review, the review will be coordinated by the Advisory Council.

    Separation from Position: Termination of employment may be initiated by either the church or the employee with four weeks’ notice, except in cases of termination for cause, in which no notice is required to be given by the church. An exit interview will be provided to the employee with the Employee Relations Team (or Advisory Council in the absence of an Employee Relations Team) and any other pertinent parties.
