History
Baptist ministry in Augusta began in the 1830’s. Our present building was dedicated in 1907 and housed the Penney Memorial Free Baptist Church. It was named for Dr. Charles F. Penney who was pastor for 24 years starting in the 1860’s. Friendly relations had existed for some time between Penney Memorial and the First Baptist Church in Augusta. In 1920 the two churches merged to become Penney Memorial United Baptist Church. A large educational building was added to the rear of the church in 1956. The church has had a rich history of preaching the Word of God, sending people into Christian Ministry and outreach into the community.
In the spring of 2007 we removed a “time capsule” that was set into the cornerstone in 1906 during the building’s construction. We hope to salvage some of the water damaged contents, add them to things representing present ministry and place a new capsule for the next 100 years. Our vision is to continue building on the foundation of ministry that has been laid in the past and move forward in sharing the love of Christ through service to others.
